School Services

Young Wales is one of the premier centres for creative education in Wales and has ambitions to open centres in each unitary authority. We are currently operating in 5 counties:

• Blaenau Gwent

• Caerphilly

• Cardiff

• Bridgend

• Rhondda Cynon Taf

The unique element in Young Wales is its commercial underpinning.  The work we carry out for our clients is completed by our highly trained professionals but supported by the students.  This means they work with us on real live projects from concept right through to delivery, this type of experience is invaluable.

We support our students to acquire all the necessary qualifications and experience they need so that when they are ready to move on they are fully prepared.  We’ll also help all our students to produce a portfolio to showcase their work to future employers.

Our programme enables its students to demonstrate an awareness of and ability to work in the outside world.  Young Wales is an opportunity to experience real life work, and gain qualifications in a fun and creative environment.

Student Design Work

Cre8

Based on our creative industries experience, Young Wales has developed a stimulating and engaging range of work-based learning, which we have named the CRE8 programme (CREATE). Young Wales will, whenever possible, structure the learning opportunities around project based tasks, which provides learners with a view of the whole job, not just the section they work on.

Students who opt for the CRE8 programme will develop skills in photography, graphic design, music production, film and video production and web design. students are also given the opportunity to design bespoke tee shirts which are manufactured and sold by students involved in the INNOV8 programme.

Our catering and hospitality programme is called C8TER and focuses around preparing learners for starting their own catering business. As well as food preparation and food safety, the programme covers entrepreneurial skills, teamwork and communication skills, healthy eating, marketing and customer service skills. Students who opt for our C8TER programme will

learn the basics of food preparation and cooking in a working kitchen, producing breakfasts and lunch meals for staff and students. They are also introduced to producing high quality jams, chutneys, infused oils and fudges for sale in hampers working alongside students following the INNOV8 programme.

Beautific8

Our Health and Beauty programme at Young Wales is great introductory course to those who are keen to learn about both the subject and it’s industry. The course offers up to a Level 1 NOCN Diploma in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development. The diploma course covers a range of skills and subject areas relevant to the field. This programme will give learners valuable experience enabling progression to further education in similar subject areas in pursuit of a career.

Our course Tutor has been a fully qualified beauty therapist for the past 7 years and has gained industry experience from working in salons, spa’s and running her own business. Before working for Young Wales she taught short courses at a beauty school in Cardiff and has all the experience needed to teach, train and guide students wishing to pursue a career within the beauty industry.

The course modules include a mix of theory, research and practical activities to gain real hands-on experience in the health and beauty industry. These subjects then coincide with other core modules that help pupil’s to develop basic life skills and encourage independence.

For learners who may not wish to engage in the creative industries we have developed programmes to meet student needs in property maintenance related skills.

Our property maintenance programme is called RENOV8 and works in partnership with local social housing providers. Learners follow a structured programme of property maintenance and trade related learning experiences, both in centre and in real work environments. students will learn a multitude of skills including, painting and decorating, carpentry skills, plastering, tiling, wallpapering and health and safety. The RENOv8 programme gives learners the chance to develop practical skills for their future.

Educ8!

Young Wales EDUC8 programme brings together a comprehensive range of units which promote the development of skills essential to adult life. We work with students to help them engage in real time projects where the use of team work skills, effective communication and functional maths is developed and consolidated. These core subjects are the cross-cutting themes on which to base the other strands of our provision. EDUC8 underpins and reinforces traditional 3 Rs learning, building self confidence and helping to break down barriers to learning. All students at Young Wales follow an EDUC8 programme in conjunction with their chosen pathway of CRE8, INNOv8, C8TER or RENOv8 giving the learner a great foundation to build on.

Innov8, as it’s name suggests is a ground breaking project which focuses on enterprise skills and product design challenges to give students an insight into how to run a small business. Working with students on the C8TER and CRE8 programmes, students learn how to sell produce created by students through an on-line shop and mainstream high street outlets. products which will be sold by the students include food items such as high quality jams, chutneys, infused oils and fudges and bespoke tee shirts. The Innov8 programme will engage students in real-time customer service environments where they will engage in selling produce they have made themselves.
